At the end of June, 1917, 13th Rifle Brigade of 111 Brigade, 37th Division moved into support trenches in the left sub sector of the brigade front on the forward slope of the Wytschaete-Messines Ridge, just to the south of Ypres with Battalion HQ at Torreken Farm. They spent ten days here digging new trenches and  providing carrying parties for the Royal Engineers. The Battalion Diary gives no other information about this period and makes no mention of casualties so it is not known what caused the deaths of at least four men on 5th July, 1917. This area had recently been captured from the enemy during the Battle of Messines and the artillery war was still a constant factor here so it was shell fire that was the likely culprit. One of those killed was Walter Mullins.
